IDI is mandated to support Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in developing countries to sustainably enhance their performance and capacity.

Our History

In 2026, IDI will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary and its 25th year in Norway!

The Office of the Auditor General of Canada first hosted IDI from 1986 to 2000. In 2001, IDI moved to Norway with the National Audit Office of Norway (NAO) as its host.  

IDI transitioned from a training facility to an organisation focused on supporting Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) to strengthen their institutional, organisational, and professional capacity, as well as their own performance. 

Working with peers and partners from INTOSAI bodies, INTOSAI regional bodies and other stakeholders have been central to IDI’s work. This model has contributed to IDI’s success and has been refined over the years.

Today, our work benefits Supreme Audit Institutions from over 140 developing countries and contributes to making a difference in the lives of citizens from these countries. 

Our Mission

The INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI) supports Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in developing countries in sustainably enhancing their performance and capacities. We are part of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and work together with INTOSAI Goal Committees, Regional Organisations, SAIs and other partners and stakeholders for independent, well-governed, professional and relevant SAIs.
