Independence

Independence is a precondition for a Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) to carry out its mandate effectively.

Independence is a foundational element of any institution that is seeking to promote accountability, including Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs). When they are free of political influence, SAIs can promote good governance, transparency, and accountability in public financial management. These institutions must be able to operate independently in order to conduct the high-quality, impactful work for society.

We have data that tells a compelling story for SAIs: they are facing challenges in financial independence, restrictions in conducting their audits, and political threats to SAI leadership. Using this knowledge at IDI, we support SAI independence through targeted initiatives that will strengthen SAI legal frameworks, collaborate with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), advocate for their independence, and foster strategic partnerships.
