The SAI Innovation Framing Webinar, “Innovating for Climate Action,” was held on 20-21 August 2024. This event was part of IDI’s SAI Innovations Initiative, which focuses on fostering innovation, experimentation, and continuous professional development at both personal and organisational levels. Our webinars aim to bring together SAI leadership, SAI audit professionals, innovators from across the INTOSAI Community, and multiple stakeholders.
This year’s theme, “Innovating for Climate Action”, delves into innovations in addressing climate change, focusing on government actions and the role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs).

In this SAI Innovations Marketplace Webinar, participants had the unique opportunity to gain insights from our esteemed colleagues at SAI Brazil. They shared their expertise and experiences related to the theme of ” Satellite information as a tool to combat human rights violations in extractive industries in the Amazon”.
In addition to the presentation from SAI Brazil, our colleagues from GIZ provided a brief overview of their work in the OLACEFS region.
Our colleagues from SAI Kosovo recently presented a webinar on “Audit of Information Technology and Audit Management System”.
During the webinar, they introduced the SITA system, which is a web application and content management system.
The system is designed to support auditors and management of KNAO in managing all types of audit processes and related documents.
In 2020, we discussed “Innovative SAIs Going F.A.R.” and in 2021, our main theme for SAI Innovations was “Innovating for Impact.” In 2022, we joined the LOTA initiative to allow SAI panellists to share their experiences on using data analytics in financial audits.
In 2023, we hosted an exceptional event that brought together leaders, experts, and practitioners in the innovation and inclusion field. The event consisted of two 90-minute roundtable conversations, totalling three hours, with simultaneous interpretation provided in English, Spanish, French, and Arabic.
The webinar provided a platform for participants to exchange innovative ideas and enhance audit practices that promote innovation and inclusion through shared experiences. Let’s work together to drive positive change in our organizations and communities!
After discussing “Innovative SAIs Going F.A.R.” in 2020, we reflected on “Innovating for Impact” as the main theme of SAI Innovations for 2021, in 2022 we plan to meet LOTA (Leveraging on Technological Advancement) initiative as our SAI panelists share their experience on the use of data analytics in Financial Audit.
Under this theme, we want to share experiences and practical use case from 11 SAIs representing different INTOSAI regions. The questions that SAI panelists will answer include:
The Design Audit Studio (DAS) team uses various forms of interactivity to help auditors increase the impact of our audit work. In this session the DAS team answers the question why they think public audit institutions should adopt the expression ‘form follows function’. A journey with 4 members from the SAI Netherlands’ design studio, starting with the history of design, guides you through examples and concludes with learnings on how you can share knowledge interactively yourself.

In this event the DIARI team shared case studies, experiences, and lessons learnt on how analytical models help to detect risks of potential losses, how modern technologies support this process, and how information from various sources might be accessed. These information sources among other include different citizen participation channels, such as citizen complaint application, social media platforms, such as Twitter and other webpages, which can be scraped and analysed with the modern tools.
This presentation demonstrated the SAI Colombia’s model meant to process the information provided by citizens through various channels and to generate alerts. The presentation provided us an insight into the process of analysis and investigation of generated alerts by DIARI teams, as well as the process of following-up on the recommendations to ensure good management of money. Case studies included in the presentation covered among other such projects as large construction projects that may not have been completed in time without SAI Colombia’s intervention, as well as examples on new possibilities provided by use of analytical tools and citizen participation.

Why are innovations needed? How can innovation take place in challenging environments? Innovations of yesterday may become new ways of working. Some innovations scale, some are replicable, others are not, but could still offer inspiration and food for thought.
After discussing “Innovative SAIs Going F.A.R.” in 2020, we plan to reflect on “Innovating for Impact” as the main theme of SAI Innovations for 2021. Under this theme, we want to share experiences both from the SAI community and stakeholders of the innovative solutions they have found to increase the audit impact of their work, especially related to audit communication and stakeholder engagement throughout the audits. We should always keep in mind that innovations happen everywhere and anywhere and should always be fit-for-context. The July Framing Webinars kick-off this discussion of innovating for impact.
