We at IDI were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of South African Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu this Wednesday.
Kimi was an esteemed colleague and leader in the INTOSAI community. His passion and drive for promoting accountability in his home country brought him national acclaim, while his tireless efforts to promote capacity development and cooperation within the INTOSAI community brought him the respect and admiration of his peers around the world.
At the IDI we were also fortunate to have Kimi serve as a Board member, allowing us to benefit from his insights and advice.
Kimi Makwetu leaves behind a sterling legacy. His work as Auditor-General will continue to be a model for how SAI leadership can engage with staff, stakeholders and citizens to promote transparency and improve public accountability.
Our thoughts are with the Makwetu family and all the staff at the Office of the Auditor-General of South Africa.
